“A New Dawn for Dental Health: Canada Welcomes All!”

canada for dentist

Exciting news for families in Canada with kids under 18! Starting June 1, the brand new Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is ready to roll. This plan is designed to offer financial assistance to those with lower incomes who don’t have access to traditional dental benefits available through full-time jobs.

The rollout of the plan is occurring in phases, with eligible seniors over 65 gaining access in December 2023. The second phase began on June 1, allowing adults with disabilities and children under 18 to utilize the plan. This expansion means that eligible newcomers will no longer be responsible for covering dental care costs for their children aged 12-18.

All eligible Canadians will be able to use the plan, starting in 2025 at a date yet to be determined.

As a temporary resident, you may be eligible. According to Service Canada, individuals who wish to use the CDCP must meet specific criteria:

– They must not have access to a dental insurance plan.
– Their adjusted family net income should be less than $90,000.
– They must have filed a tax return in the previous year.
– They should be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

For temporary residents, such as those on work or study permits, eligibility depends on having one of the following residency codes on their most recent Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA):

Eligible residency codes: 0, 5, 8, 9, 10, 12
Ineligible residency codes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 11, 13, 15

Sun Life provides coverage on behalf of the Canadian government and will be given the applicant’s information. Once enrolled, Sun Life will send:

– Information on the CDCP
– A member card
– A coverage start date

Starting from July 8, 2024, oral health providers will be able to bill Sun Life directly for services provided on a claim-by-claim basis without formally signing up for the CDCP. This means that after July 8, participants can see any dentist capable of direct billing Sun Life. Before this date, clients will need to visit a dentist who has already agreed to participate in the program.

Cost of dental care in Canada

Newly arrived individuals often face challenges accessing affordable dental care due to their higher likelihood of being employed in low-paying or precarious roles without dental insurance. Part-time employment among immigrant and temporary foreign workers has increased, compensating for a decline among Canadian-born workers. Dental care falls outside of public healthcare plans, leaving individuals to cover the full cost. The Canadian Dental Coverage Program aims to extend dental insurance to approximately nine million uninsured Canadians.
