Exciting news! Canada has just launched new and enhanced caregiver pilot programs to replace the current Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot, which are set to expire on June 17.
Under the new programs, home care workers will now receive permanent resident status upon their arrival in Canada, without needing a specific amount of work experience in the country. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to work for organizations that provide temporary or part-time care for semi-independent or recovering individuals. This is a game-changer for caregivers looking to start a new and fulfilling chapter in Canada!
To be eligible for these programs, caregivers must achieve a minimum of level 4 on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), possess the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma, have recent and relevant work experience, and receive an offer for a full-time home care job. This marks a departure from the previous pilot programs, which required a CLB of 5, a year of Canadian post-secondary education (or its foreign equivalent), and at least six months of work experience.
According to the 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada anticipates welcoming over 15,000 new permanent residents through caregiver programs. As of April 30, 2024, approximately 5,700 caregivers and their family members have become permanent residents since the launch of the initial pilot programs in 2019.
With Canada’s aging population, the demand for caregivers is expected to rise, as over nine million Canadians are anticipated to retire in the next six years. Additionally, the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence has highlighted the urgent needs for caregivers in Canada, particularly noting that many caregivers are 65 years or older and may require care themselves. The need for childcare providers is also growing, as more women seek to enter the workforce, as shown by Statistics Canada data from 2023.
