Canada Extends Medical Exam Exemption for Low-Risk Foreign Nationals
Great news for foreign nationals in Canada! Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended the temporary public policy that exempts certain low-risk individuals from needing an additional Immigration Medical Examination (IME). This policy, which was initially introduced two years ago, will now remain in effect until October 5, 2029.
The aim of this extension is to accelerate immigration application processing for eligible applicants and improve overall services. Here’s what you need to know:
Who qualifies?
- Foreign nationals applying for permanent or temporary residence, or a permanent resident visa from within Canada.
- Applicants who have completed an IME in the past five years (even if it has expired).
- Individuals who pose no public health or safety risks and have complied with any necessary public health monitoring.
This policy has been instrumental in assisting more than 286,000 applicants since its inception. It has effectively expedited the application process and minimized bureaucratic hurdles. The extension of this policy underscores IRCC’s dedication to enhancing operational effectiveness while prioritizing public health. This is achieved through collaborative efforts with the Public Health Agency of Canada.
What if you’re not eligible?
For individuals who do not qualify for an exemption, there’s no need to be concerned. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will support you throughout the process, and you will be required to undergo the standard health screening procedures, which will include a new Immigration Medical Examination (IME).
