Big Changes Ahead: The UK’s New Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Scheme
Starting in 2025, the UK government will roll out significant changes to its non-visa entry requirements. Visitors who don’t need a visa to travel to Britain will now require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), similar to the ESTA system used by the US. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming changes and how they may affect your travel plans.
What is the ETA Scheme?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital travel permit linked to your passport, allowing multiple trips to the UK for stays of up to six months over two years (or until your passport expires). Costing £10, the ETA is a simple and affordable way to manage short-term visits.
Who Will Need an ETA?
From November 2024, citizens of non-EU countries will need an ETA to enter the UK. The scheme will expand to include European nationals from April 2025. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Who needs an ETA: Anyone traveling to the UK without a visa, except British and Irish citizens.
- Who doesn’t: British and Irish passport holders, those with a UK visa, or people settled in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme.
Key Benefits and Restrictions:
- What you can do: Tourism, business, visiting friends and family, or short-term study (up to 6 months).
- What you can’t do: Marry, claim benefits, work as self-employed, or live in the UK through frequent visits.
The UK’s ETA system aligns with other nations like the US, Australia, and Europe’s upcoming ETIAS program, as the government seeks to digitise and secure its borders. However, concerns have been raised, particularly by Heathrow Airport, about the potential impact on transit passengers.
Stay informed, and if you’re planning a visit to the UK, make sure you have your ETA ready!
