Exploring New Horizons: How Indians are Embracing Global Travel

Indians are increasingly embracing the allure of international travel, driven by rising disposable incomes, global exposure, and the growing ease of globe-trotting. The latest report from MakeMyTrip, spanning June 2023 to May 2024, reveals fascinating insights into this burgeoning trend.

A Surge in Global Wanderlust

The report highlights a remarkable 32% increase in Indians embarking on two or more international trips, with those taking three or more journeys soaring by 37%. This trend underscores India’s insatiable appetite for exploring the world.

Top Destinations: Where Are Indians Headed?

  • UAE & Thailand: Leading the pack, with 17% and 14% of searches, respectively.
  • USA, Singapore & Indonesia: Rounding out the top five preferred destinations.

Despite these favorites, Indian travelers are beginning to explore beyond the usual hotspots, as searches for the top 10 global cities dropped slightly from 45% to 42%.

Emerging Travel Destinations

  • Almaty, Kazakhstan & Baku, Azerbaijan: These cities are the breakout stars, with search volumes growing by 527% and 395%, respectively.
  • Other rising stars: Hong Kong, Colombo, and Tokyo are also gaining traction among Indian travelers.

Budget vs. Luxury: Travel Preferences

Indian travelers are diverse in their preferences:

  • Budget-friendly hotspots: Pattaya and Kuala Lumpur, where nearly 50% of international hotel bookings are under ₹7,000.
  • Luxury getaways: New York, Paris, and Zurich are the top choices for high-end travelers.

Additionally, there’s a notable 42% surge in searches for alternative accommodations like hostels, homestays, and villas, with Bali, Dubai, and Singapore leading the charge.

Year-Round Travel Trends

  • December: The peak month for international travel searches.
  • Short-haul vs. Long-haul: Short-haul destinations see a spike from October to January, while long-haul trips gain popularity from April to September.

As Indian travelers increasingly opt for flexible travel options, including zero cancellation and insurance add-ons, last-minute bookings are also on the rise, with nearly 50% of international flight tickets being booked less than 14 days before departure.

Indians are redefining global travel, blending budget and luxury experiences while exploring both classic and emerging destinations. Ready to join the wave? Pack your bags and set your sights on the world!
