Every year, the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) releases its highly anticipated Global Livability Ranking, assessing cities worldwide based on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. The 2024 report highlights the exceptional livability of two Canadian cities: Calgary and Vancouver.
A Shift in the Canadian Landscape
In a remarkable turn of events, Calgary, previously ranked seventh, has ascended to fifth place, tying with Geneva and surpassing Vancouver, which slipped to seventh from its former fifth position. This shift underscores Calgary’s growing appeal and the dynamic nature of urban livability.
The Fall of Toronto
Toronto, however, experienced a notable decline, falling from ninth place in 2023 to 12th in 2024. This marks the first time in three years that Toronto has been absent from the global top 10, a drop attributed to ongoing housing challenges that have impacted its overall livability score.

Calgary, crowned as Canada’s most livable city, boasts an impressive overall score of 96.8. The city excels in stability, healthcare, and education, scoring a perfect 100 in these areas. While it faces challenges in culture, environment, and infrastructure, Calgary’s scores remain commendably high, solidifying its status as a top destination for newcomers seeking affordable living and excellent schools.
Vancouver: Consistent Excellence
Despite a slight drop in ranking, Vancouver remains a paragon of livability with a score of 96.6. The city’s stellar performance in education and healthcare is tempered by challenges in housing and infrastructure. Nevertheless, Vancouver’s vibrant cultural scene and robust healthcare system ensure its continued presence among the world’s elite cities.
Toronto’s Housing Hurdles
Toronto’s descent to 12th place highlights the city’s struggle with escalating housing costs and shortages.
