Big Salary Boost for Foreign Workers in Sweden

Big Salary Boost for Foreign Workers in Sweden

Exciting news! Sweden has just updated the salary threshold for work permit applicants, and it’s a game-changer. With the latest figures from Statistics Sweden, the median salary has spiked, leading to a significant increase in the threshold. As of June 18, 2024, the new median salary in Sweden is a whopping 35,600 kronor per month, which means the new salary threshold is now 28,480 kronor per month, accounting for 80% of the median salary. This is a big jump from the previous threshold of 27,360 kronor per month, which was based on an earlier median salary of 34,200 kronor. It’s definitely an exciting time for work permit applicants in Sweden!

Looking forward, the Swedish government intends to further elevate the work permit threshold to 100% of the median salary, with a proposed implementation date of June 1st, 2025. Notably, certain categories of workers will be exempt from this change to ensure fairness across different employment sectors.

To facilitate the transition, a one-year grace period for work permit renewals has been established. During this period, the existing rule of 80% of the median salary will continue to apply. This grace period is set to expire on June 1st, 2026, providing current permit holders sufficient time to adapt to the new requirements.

The updated salary threshold will apply to all new work permit applications and renewals submitted on or after June 18th, 2024, with no impact on applications already in process. It’s crucial to note that the threshold is subject to annual updates based on the most recent median salary figures from Statistics Sweden, necessitating readiness for potential annual adjustments.

Moreover, applicants must ensure that their salaries not only meet the threshold but also align with industry standards or collective bargaining agreements. For seasonal workers on permits lasting 90 days or less, the previous salary requirement of 13,000 kronor per month remains in effect, along with the need for salaries to conform to industry standards or collective bargaining agreements.
