Philippines Welcomes Aspiring Indian Doctors with New Pathway to Practice Locally
The Philippines is poised to become an even more attractive destination for Indian medical students seeking a high-quality education at an affordable price. Thanks to recent legislative changes, foreign graduates can now practice medicine in the Philippines after earning their Doctor of Medicine degree. This exciting development is expected to lead to a 25-30% surge in Indian students choosing the Philippines for their medical studies.
“This is a landmark achievement, not just for Indian students but for all international medical graduates in the Philippines,” says Kadwin Pillai, Director of Transworld Educare and Chairman of Kings International Medical Academy. “It offers a clear path to practice medicine locally or internationally, solidifying the Philippines’ position as a leader in medical education across the Asia-Pacific region.”
The new policy also benefits Indian students aiming to return and practice in India. It aligns with the National Medical Council’s (NMC) requirement for a valid local practicing license to appear for the Indian screening test.
The Philippines already attracts around 2,000 Indian medical students annually, a number expected to climb significantly. This is due in part to the country’s high-quality education at competitive costs, with tuition fees considerably lower than those in Western nations.
Following the legislative amendment, Indian students who graduate from a Philippine College of Medicine recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and complete a 12-month internship will be eligible to register and practice medicine in the Philippines.
India itself witnesses a massive influx of students pursuing medical degrees, with a record 2.4 million appearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (UG) this year. However, to meet the growing demand for doctors, approximately 20,000 Indian students seek medical education abroad.
The Philippines joins Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan as top destinations for Indian medical aspirants. Previously, China and Ukraine were also popular choices, but student numbers dropped significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The Philippines’ new policy presents a compelling opportunity for Indian students seeking a world-class medical education with a clear path to practice, both domestically and internationally.
