Indian Students Shifting Away from Canada Toward Domestic and Regional Business Programs
The past few years have seen a significant shift in the study abroad preferences of Indian students, with a growing number opting to pursue business education closer to home rather than traditional destinations like Canada. According to the latest Prospective Student Survey from the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), domestic application plans within India expanded from 41% in 2022 to 53% in 2023. Meanwhile, interest in Canadian programs declined from 14% in 2019 to just 6% in 2023.
So what’s driving this trend?
Safety and Diplomatic Concerns
The survey suggests that safety concerns and the state of diplomatic relations between India and Canada have been key factors behind the declining preference for Canadian business schools. In the past year, tensions between the two countries have escalated, creating uncertainty and unease for prospective Indian students.
Affordability and Career Prospects
Domestic programs in India are also becoming increasingly attractive, as they offer a more affordable option without requiring students to travel abroad. With growing economic opportunities within the country, many Indian candidates now see strong career prospects from staying closer to home for their studies.
Regional Hubs Gain Appeal
Beyond just India, business schools across Central and South Asia have seen a surge in interest, with the preference for this region growing from 18% in 2019 to 26% in 2023. Factors like lower costs, seamless visa processes, and access to emerging regional markets are making these programs highly appealing.
STEM-Focused Curriculum
Another notable trend is the rising demand for STEM-certified graduate management programs, especially among Indian students. Over 57% of Indian candidates now prefer these tech-infused curricula, up from 43% just four years ago. This aligns with the growing emphasis on skills like data analytics and digital transformation within the business world.
While the US and Western Europe remain top destinations for many Indian students, the data suggests a clear shift in priorities. Factors like affordability, career prospects, and regional proximity are now taking precedence over the traditional reputation-driven model of international education.
As business schools adapt to these evolving student preferences, we’ll likely see the global higher education landscape continue to transform in the years ahead. For ambitious Indian candidates, the options closer to home are quickly becoming just as compelling as the far-flung study abroad hubs of the past.
