Limiting International Student Permits in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia

Did you know that according to a recent CBC report, Nova Scotia is set to process a limited number of international study permit applications for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year? The Canadian government has allocated just 12,900 spots, so if you’re planning on studying in Nova Scotia, it’s important to keep this in mind and submit your application as soon as possible.

Nova Scotia is all set to receive its allocation of study permits for international students from the Canadian government. This year, the allocation will be divided among the province’s universities, community and private career colleges, and language schools. This move has been taken to improve the success rates of applications and enhance the integrity of the system.

In the past, some schools submitted an infinite number of applications, resulting in low success rates. However, with the new cap, around 292,000 permits will be allotted for undergraduate and postgraduate students in 2024, indicating a promising future. Nova Scotia submitted a whopping 19,000 applications for the academic year 2020-21, but the number of applications does not translate directly to the number of students attending schools in the province.

In order to address the issue of “unsustainable growth” in the international student program, the initial cap of around 360,000 was reduced by 35% over a period of two years. This move was considered necessary to ensure a brighter future for the education sector of the province. It is important to note that the immigration minister may not have the statutory authority to limit the number of approved visas; however, the revised policy is a much-needed change that will benefit the education sector of the province.

The reduction in the cap will help to ensure that the international student program remains sustainable in the long run, while also providing educational opportunities for international students who wish to study in Canada. Overall, the revised policy is a positive step towards creating a stronger and more sustainable education system in the province.
