What is needed to get a Canadian visitor visa?
1. Complete the needed forms
- If you’re applying for a temporary resident visa in Canada, you’ll need to fill out different forms depending on whether you’re applying from inside or outside Canada. Those who apply from outside Canada will need to fill out the application for a temporary resident visa, the family information form, the statutory declaration of common-law union, the use of representative form (if applicable), and the authority to release personal information to a designated individual form (if applicable).
2. Collect the needed documentation
Applicants for a visitor visa need to provide the following documents in addition to the application form:
- Proof of fee payment
- Passport photocopy
- Two photos meeting visa photo specifications
- Financial support proof
- Travel purpose letter
- Current immigration status photocopy
- Custody documents for minors traveling alone
any additional documents required by the visa office. Remember to complete and validate the application form online to generate a barcode, or print the barcode if applying by paper.
How to pay required fees and prove fee payment to IRCC
There are two fees for visitor visa applicants: application processing fees and biometric fees. Application processing fees are $100 CAD per person and $500 CAD for a family of five or more. Biometric fees are $85 CAD per person and $170 per family. The fees cannot be refunded and must be paid online. After completing the process, you will receive an official IRCC receipt with a barcode that you should attach to your application.
How to provide proof of financial support
You can prove your ability to support yourself and dependents during your Canada visit with cash, cheque, bank draft, money order, or written statements. You may also use bank statements, employment letters, or tax filing information.
How to write a “purpose of travel” letter
Foreign nationals must prove their legitimate reasons to enter and reside in Canada. Visitor visa applicants may need a letter of invitation from a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
Applying with family members
Those who want to bring their family members along on their visit to Canada must fill out an application form for each family member. You can submit all the applications together online or in paper at the VAC, and receive a single receipt for all the applications. Additionally, every family member and dependent must meet the requirements for temporary residence in Canada.
