This is a game-changer for international students! From today onwards, students enrolled in master’s programs that are less than two years long can obtain a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) that is valid for three years. This new rule is set to open up a world of opportunities for aspiring graduates, giving them ample time to gain valuable work experience and explore new horizons.
IRCC has expanded the eligibility for master’s students to receive longer work permits. PGWPs for other students will correspond to the length of the study program, up to a maximum of three years. Spouses of master’s and doctoral students will be eligible for a spousal work permit, while the eligibility for spousal open work permits for Canadian citizens or permanent residents remains unchanged.
What are the PGWP eligibility criteria?
To be eligible for a PGWP, international students must:
- Have completed studies in an academic, vocational, or professional training program that is at least eight months long, at an eligible DLI;
- Have studied in a program that led to a degree, diploma or certificate;
- Must have been a full-time student in Canada throughout the program of study completed, as indicated on the PGWP application.
- Received transcript and official letter from DLI confirming completion of program (required for PGWP application).
- Have graduated from a public post-secondary institution such as a:
- College;
- Trade or technical school;
- University;
- CEGEP (in Quebec);
- Private post-secondary school (in Quebec) that operates under the same rules as public schools in Quebec;
- Qualifying programs of 900+ hours offered by private schools in Quebec leading to DEP or ASP.
- Canadian private schools can award degrees authorized by the province to students only if they are enrolled in a degree program.
Any of these educational institutions must be a DLI.
Please take note that starting in September 2024, individuals who are enrolled in a program that utilises a curriculum licensing framework, where a private college has been licensed to deliver the curriculum of an associated public college, will no longer be eligible to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
