Have you heard the latest news about Canadian immigration? The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that starting from January 30th, 2024, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core is an approved language test for immigration pathways, except for the Student Direct Stream. This makes the entire process more accessible and exciting.
Eligibility Across Immigration Programs
This development implies that candidates in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), those participating in Express Entry managed programs, and individuals requiring a language test for diverse Canadian immigration purposes (excluding SDS) – including Canadian citizenship applications – can opt for the PTE Core.
Understanding the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core
The PTE Core is a computer-based test that assesses general English proficiency for Canadian immigration. Candidates are evaluated on their speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills within a strict two-hour timeframe. The test is available at over 400 locations worldwide for convenient access.
Test Structure
- Speaking and Writing (50 minutes)
- Reading (30 minutes)
- Listening (30 minutes)
Transition from PTE Essential to PTE Core
The introduction of the PTE Core marks the replacement of the previously accepted PTE Essential test for Canadian immigration. Candidates must note that Pearson, similar to other approved language testing organizations, provides multiple types of tests, such as PTE Academic. As a result, immigration candidates should ensure they undertake the correct test aligned with their chosen program.
Diverse Accepted Language Tests
- CELPIP General Test (English)
- IELTS General Training (English)
- PTE Core (English)
- TEF Canada (French)
- TCF Canada (French)
All these tests evaluate language abilities across reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Candidates must meet specific criteria within these four skills based on the program they apply for.
Tailored Criteria for Different Immigration Programs
Language proficiency requirements vary for different immigration programs. For example, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) requires a minimum CLB level of 7, while the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) needs a minimum CLB level of 5 for speaking and listening and a minimum of 4 for reading and writing. The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) requires a minimum CLB level of 7 or 5 across all language abilities, depending on the National Occupation Classification (NOC) skill level of their job. The PTE Core is now accepted by IRCC, giving candidates more options to demonstrate their language proficiency.
