European Dominance: Top Passport Powerhouses Revealed

Four European countries now share the top spot with Singapore:

Four European countries, namely France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, have now joined Singapore as the world’s most powerful passports. In the past ranking, Japan had dropped to the third position, but it has now regained its spot at the top. This unprecedented change has brought the total number of countries sharing the top slot to six.

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on their visa-free access to various countries. As the information for each country changes, the index gets regularly updated.

The countries that have secured the top spot now have visa-free access to a record-breaking 194 countries out of a total of 227 countries worldwide.

In the previous ranking, Germany, Italy, and Spain were in the second place, while France was in third. However, in a rival passport ranking released last month by VisaGuide.World, Spain was ranked above Singapore based on the type of visa-free access and the significance score of a destination.

European passports dominate the top 10:

In Henley’s 2024 ranking, European countries dominate the top 10, with Finland and Sweden rising to second place alongside South Korea. Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands follow in third place, with Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, and the UK in fourth. Countries like Greece, Malta, and Switzerland occupy the fifth place.

How does the Henley Passport Index rank passports?

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a visa. Countries score one point for every visa-free destination. The ranking is updated monthly and draws on data from the IATA. No points are awarded for destinations where a visa is required.

Which countries have the least powerful passports?

The number of visa-free accessible destinations has doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. Afghanistan has the weakest passport with visa-free access to only 28 countries. The UAE has climbed the most in the last decade, adding 106 destinations since 2014. Henley & Partners’ research shows that visa-free access results in greater economic performance.
