Summer Surge IRCC Application Backlog Grows

Tackling the Immigration Backlog: What You Need to Know

As of August 31, 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is facing a significant challenge, with a staggering application backlog of 1,078,300. This figure marks a 7.6% increase from July, when the backlog first surpassed the million mark in several months. Despite IRCC’s ongoing efforts, this situation raises concerns for many aspiring immigrants.

Understanding the Backlog

To grasp the scale of this backlog, it’s essential to understand how IRCC defines it. An application is considered part of the backlog if it exceeds the processing timeline set by the department. Here are some key points:

  • Permanent Residence Applications: There are 805,600 applications currently in inventory, with 37% (about 300,800) classified as backlog.
  • Temporary Residence Applications: The backlog has grown from 49% in July to 53% in August, translating to 738,900 out of 1,386,000 total applications.
  • Citizenship Applications: In contrast, citizenship applications remain relatively stable, with only 38,600 out of 229,200 in backlog, holding steady at 17%.

IRCC’s Commitment to Improvement

IRCC has acknowledged the backlog as a pressing issue and is actively working on strategies to alleviate it, including:

  • Streamlining Online Processes: Expanding online application options to make submissions easier.
  • Virtual Citizenship Ceremonies: Reducing in-person gatherings while maintaining essential services.
  • Targeting Temporary Resident Volumes: Introducing a “soft cap” to manage the influx of temporary residents effectively.

The department aims to process 80% of applications within set service standards, promising updates on these standards by December 31, 2024.

While it may be challenging to deal with the backlog, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is actively working to tackle it. It’s important for you to stay updated on the status of your application and grasp these adjustments to stay informed and empowered throughout your immigration process. Make sure to regularly check the IRCC website for the most recent updates and guidance.
