The UK Shifts to eVisas: What Immigrants Need to Know
The UK has launched a new initiative urging all immigrants, including those from India, to transition from physical immigration documents to a digital eVisa system. This move is part of the UK government’s broader plan to fully digitise its border and immigration processes by 2025.
If you are currently using a biometric residence permit (BRP), a visa vignette sticker, or a biometric residence card (BRC) as proof of your immigration status, it’s important to be aware of the ongoing transition to digital documentation. Most BRPs are set to expire by the end of 2024, and the Home Office is gradually moving these documents online. Visa holders can now access their immigration status through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account, marking a shift towards digital access and management of immigration records.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Who is affected?Immigrants using physical BRPs, BRCs, visa vignettes, or ink stamps confirming their indefinite leave to remain/enter the UK.
- What are the benefits?eVisas offer convenience, security, and cost savings. They cannot be lost or stolen, and switching won’t affect your current immigration status.
- How can you switch? The process is free and straightforward. BRP holders are being emailed with instructions to create a UKVI online account.
- Need help?Free advice and support are available from UK-wide organisations such as Migrant Help and Citizens Advice Scotland. A national campaign will also raise awareness of the transition.
“As the UK works towards implementing a seamless digital immigration system by 2025, it is important for individuals to take proactive steps before their physical documents expire. Embracing eVisas offers the opportunity to enjoy the convenience and efficiency of a fully digital immigration process. Don’t delay – make the transition to eVisas today and streamline your immigration journey!”
