Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has launched a new temporary policy, allowing certain Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates to apply for an Open Work Permit (OWP). This policy, effective from August 11, 2024, will provide newcomers more flexibility to work while pursuing permanent residency. Here’s what you need to know:
Who Can Benefit?
Eligible candidates include those who:
- Hold a valid work permit or had one that expired after May 7, 2024.
- Have a job offer and a support letter from their province or territory confirming their placement in the Expression of Interest pool or other application inventory processes.
- Are part of the relevant PNP process, showing clear potential to contribute to Canada’s labor market.
Key Scenarios for Eligibility:
- Current Work Permit Holders
- Candidates with valid work permits who’ve submitted applications under Canada’s immigration regulations and have a support letter from a province or territory.
- Expired Work Permit Holders
- Candidates whose work permits expired on or after May 7, 2024, and have applied for a new work permit, extension of their status, or restoration of their temporary residency.
- Pending Work Permit Extensions
- Candidates authorized to work under paragraph 186 (u) of the Regulations with a pending or approved work permit extension.
