A New Path to Citizenship: Biden’s “Keeping Families Together” Initiative Offers Hope to Immigrants
Miguel Aleman, a 39-year-old who arrived in the U.S. from Mexico at just four years old, is one of the many immigrants anxiously awaiting the launch of President Biden’s new initiative, “Keeping Families Together.” This program, set to launch Monday, represents one of the most significant steps by the Biden administration toward providing legal status to long-term U.S. residents who entered the country without proper documentation.
For immigrants like Aleman, who has two young children with his U.S.-citizen wife and works as an Uber driver, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Without this program, Aleman might be forced to return to Mexico, potentially for a decade or more, before being allowed to re-enter the United States legally. “My whole family is here,” Aleman says, expressing the deep ties he has formed in the country he calls home.
Announced in June, “Keeping Families Together” is open to an estimated 500,000 spouses who have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years as of June 17, as well as approximately 50,000 children under 21 with a U.S.-citizen parent. This initiative allows qualifying spouses to apply for permanent residence without the need to leave the U.S., paving the way for citizenship within three years.
This move by the Biden administration comes just months before the pivotal November 5 election, where immigration has taken center stage. Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential candidate, continues to advocate for a fair path to citizenship, countering the tough rhetoric from Republican opponents who label the program as “mass amnesty.”
For Aleman and many others, “Keeping Families Together” offers a lifeline—a chance to remain with their loved ones and continue contributing to the country they call home. As the program rolls out, it is expected to face legal challenges, but for now, it symbolizes hope for countless families across the nation.
