New Zealand Launches New Visa to Boost Seasonal Workforce

New Zealand’s New Visa Pathway: A Game-Changer for Seasonal Workers!

In a move set to transform New Zealand’s seasonal labor market, the government is introducing an innovative subcategory to the Specific Purpose Work Visa (SPWV). This strategic change is designed to address the surging demand for workers during peak seasons, ensuring that vital sectors can thrive.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford announced that this new pathway will open doors for numerous industries needing additional manpower for crucial seasonal roles. “This change is a leap toward a more intelligent immigration system,” Stanford stated, emphasizing the dual goal of fostering opportunities for newcomers while safeguarding the interests of New Zealanders.

Starting from the 2024-25 season, the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme will see a cap increase of 1,250 workers, bringing the total to 20,750. This increase comes alongside a lift on the accommodation cost pause and a revised wage requirement, which now mandates that only experienced workers earn 10% above the minimum wage.

The new SPWV subcategory will work in tandem with these RSE changes, streamlining the process for employers seeking additional seasonal help. This time-limited pathway is designed to align with the nature of seasonal roles, focusing on jobs that directly relate to seasonal activities.

Applicants for this visa must have at least four months of relevant experience and secure positions paying at least $29.66 per hour, with a minimum of 30 hours per week. The roles are capped at nine months in duration, ensuring a perfect fit for seasonal demands. Employers will need current accreditation under the Accredited Employer Work Visa instructions to participate.

This forward-thinking approach aims to balance workforce needs with local job protection, setting a new standard for seasonal employment in New Zealand.
