Indian Students Abroad: A Growing Trend in 2024
In a recent Parliament session, the Indian government revealed that over 13 lakh Indian students are currently pursuing higher education abroad in 2024. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh provided this data in a written response to questions raised in the Rajya Sabha regarding the tracking of Indian students studying overseas.
A Global Presence
The data highlighted that Indian students are studying in 108 countries, with significant numbers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Singapore, Russia, Israel, and Ukraine. Specifically, there are 4,27,000 students in Canada, 3,37,630 in the US, and 8,580 in China. Interestingly, smaller numbers are present in countries like Greece (8 students), Israel (900 students), and Pakistan (14 students).
Year-on-Year Growth
The number of Indian students going abroad has seen a steady increase over the past few years. In 2023, the figure stood at 13,18,955, up from 9,07,404 in 2022. This upward trend underscores the growing aspiration among Indian students to seek international education and exposure.
Support from Indian Missions
Indian Missions and Posts abroad play a crucial role in supporting these students. They actively engage with Indian students, encouraging them to register on the Global Rishta Portal and participate in welcome ceremonies. These initiatives help students acclimate to their new environments and stay informed about safety and security measures.
Efforts to Enhance Global Mobility
In response to another query, Singh mentioned the Indian government’s ongoing efforts to increase the number of countries offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to Indian travelers. These efforts aim to simplify international travel for Indian students and professionals, fostering global mobility and connectivity.
The government’s proactive measures and the rising number of Indian students abroad reflect a dynamic shift towards global education, promising new opportunities and experiences for young Indians worldwide.
