Discover the Power of the Canadian Passport in 2024!
Henley and Partners, a leading residence and citizenship advisory firm, has unveiled their 2024 World Passport Rankings, using data from the International Air Transport Authority. The Canadian passport shines brightly, securing the 7th spot globally. This ranking reflects the incredible visa-free travel opportunities it offers, with access to 187 countries, alongside numerous work and study options. Additionally, many Canadians enjoy the privilege of dual citizenship, enhancing their international mobility.
A Prestigious Standing
For the second consecutive year, the Canadian passport ties with Czechia, Hungary, and Malta in 7th place. Singapore remains at the top, granting its holders visa-free access to 195 countries. The passports of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain, tied for second place, provide access to 192 countries. Notably, the United States ranks 8th among G7 countries, while Afghanistan holds the last spot with access to just 26 countries.
The Canadian Passport: A Legacy of Strength
Historically, the Canadian passport has been a powerful tool for international travel. Henley and Partners have consistently ranked it within the top 10 since they began their assessments nearly two decades ago. In 2014, it even reached the second spot globally.
Steps to Obtain a Canadian Passport
Becoming a Citizen
To get a Canadian passport, you must first become a Canadian citizen. If you weren’t born in Canada, this involves gaining permanent residency and meeting the physical presence requirement—living in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the past five years. Children of Canadian citizens might inherit citizenship directly, and recent rule changes have expanded this eligibility for some children born abroad.
Citizenship Requirements
- Tax Filing: Ensure all taxes are filed and paid during your residency.
- Citizenship Test: Pass the Canadian citizenship test.
- Language Proficiency: Demonstrate proficiency in English or French at a CLB level 4 or higher.
Naturalization typically takes about three years.
Applying for a Canadian Passport
After your citizenship ceremony, you can apply for a Canadian passport. You’ll need:
- Proof of Canadian citizenship.
- Any valid Canadian passport or travel document.
- Two references.
- Proof of identity.
- Two identical passport-size photos.
First-time applicants also require a guarantor. Applications can be submitted online or in person at a Service Canada centre.
