New Zealand continues to solidify its reputation as a top choice for international students seeking quality education. According to an official press release by Education New Zealand, the country saw a significant surge in international student enrolments last year, welcoming 69,135 new students. This impressive number marks a 67% increase from 2022 and represents 60% of pre-pandemic enrolments in 2019.
Education New Zealand, a government agency, plays a pivotal role in promoting the social, cultural, and economic benefits of international education. Acting Chief Executive Linda Sissons expressed her excitement over the influx, highlighting that over 69,000 international enrolments underscore New Zealand’s appeal as a study destination. She emphasized that the country offers a quality learning experience in a safe and welcoming environment, both inside and outside the classroom.
Sissons also pointed out that New Zealand’s diverse student population enriches campus life, fostering a deeper understanding of global issues. “In this time of fragile geopolitics, the melting pot of campus life can help build greater understanding and tolerance,” she added.
The university subsector experienced the most robust recovery, with 29,065 enrolments, achieving 86% of 2019 figures. Universities and schools remain the largest subsectors for international students. Notably, English language schools witnessed the highest growth, with a remarkable 511% increase from 1,565 to 9,570 students.
China remains the largest source market, contributing 35% of the international student population, followed by India at 17%, Japan at 10%, South Korea at 5%, and Thailand at 4%. Sissons reiterated the government’s commitment to a globally connected New Zealand through world-class international education, emphasizing ongoing efforts to diversify recruitment across a broader range of countries.
