Exciting news! Canada has just unveiled an amazing work permit program for U.S. H-1B visa holders, set to kick off on July 16, 2023. This fantastic initiative, led by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is all about opening up doors to fantastic job opportunities and even a potential pathway to Canadian permanent residency for all the talented and qualified individuals out there. The initial allocation of 10,000 work permits was fully utilized on the first day of the program’s launch, indicating a high demand among U.S. H-1B visa holders for this opportunity in Canada.
To cater to the overwhelming response, Canada announced in March 2024 that it would process applications from H-1B visa holders who applied before the initial cap was reached but were not issued work permits. This decision was made to ensure that those who missed out initially still have a chance to benefit from the program.
Additionally, the program extends benefits to dependents of H-1B visa holders, including spouses, common-law partners, and children, who can apply for work, study, or visitor permits in Canada.
Eligible applicants must be dependents of U.S. H-1B visa holders currently living in the United States. However, family members of highly skilled workers may also be considered eligible under this program.
There is a deadline for dependents to submit applications for open work permits by September 27, 2024, but there is no deadline for visitor or student visa applications, allowing flexibility for families planning their relocation to Canada.
Family members of H-1B visa holders can apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or a study permit through the IRCC Portal by following the standard procedures and accurately answering key questions to ensure a smooth application process.
