Exciting news! According to a recent report from Statistics Canada (StatsCan), it seems that overqualification among Canadian immigrants is on the decline. This means that more immigrants are finding jobs that align with their education and work experience.
According to a recent StatsCan report, there has been a 4.4% increase in the number of recent immigrants with at least a bachelor’s degree who are working in jobs that match their qualifications. This data is based on a comparison of census data from 2016 and 2021.
StatsCan also reported a decrease in the percentage of recent immigrants who are “over-educated” for their jobs. In 2016, 31.1% of recent immigrants fell into this category, but by 2021, this number had decreased to 26.7%.
In Canada, overqualification has been a persistent concern for recent immigrants. Statistical data from StatsCan dating back to 2001 shows a varying rate of “education-occupation mismatch” among recent immigrants. In 2001, 28.7% of recent immigrants were found to be overeducated for their occupation. The subsequent data for five-year intervals is as follows:
2006: 32.9%
2011: 27.8%
2016: 31.1%
2021: 26.7%
It’s worth noting that in 2021, recent Canadian immigrants recorded the lowest rate of overeducation in twenty years, indicating a positive trend. Corresponding data also shows that 2021 saw the highest percentage (44.4%) of recent Canadian immigrants with an “education-occupation match” in the past two decades. Looking back to 2001, StatsCan reported the following percentages of recent immigrants with a match between their education and occupation:
2016: 40.0%
2011: 43.7%
2006: 43.7%
2001: 48.0%
Addressing overqualification and finding a job in Canada
Canadian immigrants can address overqualification concerns by utilizing bridging programs if eligible. These programs, funded and organized by provincial and territorial governments, help newcomers align their international education and work experience with Canadian requirements. Note that not all industries have bridging programs. These programs prepare newcomers to work in regulated industries across Canada, matching their previous work experience.
