Big news! The Portuguese government has just unveiled fresh regulations concerning employment for foreign nationals. Under the new rules, all foreign nationals planning to work in Portugal must now secure a work visa from a Portuguese consulate before setting foot in the country. Time to adapt and get ready for this new change!
The government’s primary objective behind these regulations is to strengthen immigration rules and make it mandatory for most foreign nationals wishing to reside and work in the country to acquire a work visa. This marks a significant shift from the previous processes.
Under the previous regulations, non-citizens could enter Portugal with a tourist visa and subsequently pursue a residence permit upon securing employment. Nonetheless, the updated guidelines stipulate that the majority of individuals aspiring to work in Portugal must obtain a work visa from a Portuguese consulate before their arrival.
During a press conference held just outside of Lisbon, Presidency Minister Antonio Leitao Amaro emphasized the critical importance of implementing a well-regulated immigration system in Portugal. He discussed the potential risks associated with lack of supervision and regulations, highlighting the potential for increased uncertainty and challenges to the dignity of many immigrants.
According to the latest official government statistics, the population of foreign residents in Portugal has experienced a notable surge, increasing by 33% and reaching a historic milestone of one million individuals in the year 2023. This demographic now represents approximately 10% of the overall population of the country.
Moreover, the current center-right minority government of Portugal has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at fortifying border controls, instituting a dedicated task force to tackle a substantial backlog of more than 400,000 visa applications, and committing resources to the development of facilities intended to cater to the immediate needs of migrants residing in challenging circumstances.
