Did you know that in the most recent Express Entry draw, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sent out a whopping 3,000 invitations to apply (ITAs) for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program?
The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score required was only 522. This draw marked the first CEC-specific draw since September 14, 2021, and it boasted the lowest CRS score of the year for a non-category-based selection draw. Exciting news for potential Canadian immigrants!
This draw follows a program-specific draw on May 30 for Express Entry candidates with a nomination through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). It represents the first program-specific draws since the introduction of category-based selection in May 2023, reflecting IRCC’s commitment to facilitating the transition of temporary residents to permanent residents and reducing the overall level of temporary residents in Canada.
Before the pause, there were four draws throughout April. The first draw in April invited 1,280 candidates in a general draw on April 10, followed by a category-based selection draw for STEM occupations. The remaining two draws took place on April 23 and 24, with the 23rd inviting candidates in a general draw and the 24th inviting candidates in a French proficiency category-based selection draw.
According to a recent Access to Information Request, French proficiency is expected to lead category-based selection draws in 2024 due to the high rate of employment for bilingual candidates. STEM occupations will have the second highest number of ITAs at 25%, followed by healthcare occupations at 15%. Transport, trades, agriculture, and agri-food categories will account for 5% or less of all ITAs issued in category-based draws this year.
Express Entry is an application management system that oversees Canada’s Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Candidates are evaluated using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which considers factors such as work experience, occupation, language ability, age, education, and spousal factors to determine their CRS score. Higher scores increase the likelihood of receiving an ITA in an upcoming Express Entry draw.
In May 2023, IRCC introduced category-based selection draws for Express Entry candidates with specific work experience or language abilities. Categories include healthcare, STEM professions, trades, transport, agriculture, and strong French proficiency. Candidates must be in the Express Entry pool and meet category requirements to be considered for immigration.
