Canadian permanent residents can sponsor their family members for immigration to Canada. However, the sponsored family members must have been processed for permanent residence as dependents of the principal applicant. It’s important to note that dependents cannot arrive before the principal applicant, but must arrive with or after them.
The list of eligible family members that qualify as dependents includes:
- A spouse or common-law partner
- A dependent child
- The dependent child of a spouse or common-law partner
- The dependent child of a dependent child
Dependent children are those under 22 years old without a spouse. Children aged 22 or older may also qualify if they have a mental or physical condition and depended on their parents for financial support since before they were 22. Check the age lock-in date for the program you’re applying to.
Who cannot come with me to Canada when I receive PR?
