“Childhood Immigration: Catalyst for Canadian Success”

Did you know that immigrants who come to Canada at a young age are more likely to achieve higher education and better economic outcomes than those who arrive later in life? This is according to a recent study conducted by Statistics Canada, which used data from the Longitudinal Immigrant Database. It just goes to show that starting a new life in a new country at a young age can have a huge impact on your future success.

Newcomer tax filers who arrived in Canada as children reported higher earnings than the average of all Canadian tax filers in their age group. However, this finding was not immediate, but rather delayed based on the age of the tax filer. For instance, immigrants who were admitted to Canada as children had slightly lower median wages than all other Canadian tax filers between the ages of 18-24. However, after the age of 25, the median wages of this newcomer cohort equaled or surpassed the median wage of all Canadian tax filers in the same age bracket.

By the age of 30, newcomers admitted to Canada as children had a median wage that was 17.6% higher than that of all other Canadian tax filers in the same age bracket. The study did not provide a reason for this phenomenon, and further research is needed to determine how these results come about.

These findings add to the growing body of literature that suggests a positive correlation between the age of immigrants at the time of admission to Canada and successful economic outcomes in the country. The study also reflects the Comprehensive Ranking System’s scoring weightage that gives younger newcomers an advantage due to their youth.
