China’s Visa-Free Rollout: Where Does Your Country Stand?

China

“Get ready to unlock new travel opportunities! China has recognized the power of visa-free entry policies to boost tourism and is determined to turn this into reality. Brace yourself to experience the ultimate travel adventure as China takes a step towards creating a world of limitless possibilities!”

China has declared a 15-day visa-free entry for citizens from six additional European countries: Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg. This is effective from March 14 to November 30, 2024, and allows visa-free entry for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, and transit purposes. The announcement was made by the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, who hopes for reciprocal actions from other countries to expedite the resumption of international passenger flights and build fast-track networks for cross-border travel.

The Visa-Free Boost to Tourism

Keen to jumpstart its tourism sector, China had earlier announced visa-free entry for citizens of some countries:

  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • the Netherlands
  • Spain
  • Singapore
  • Malaysia
  • Brunei.

China and Thailand have entered into a mutual visa entry agreement, allowing citizens from both countries to visit each other visa-free for up to 30 days per entry, with a cumulative stay of 90 days per half year. This policy has led to a significant increase in foreign tourists to China, with inbound travelers reaching 3.23 million during the Spring Festival holiday, including visitors from countries now enjoying visa-free policies such as France, Germany, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Efforts to Boost Inbound

China has implemented various measures to attract foreign tourists, such as simplifying visa procedures, reducing visa fees, and introducing walk-in visa application services. The country has also made it easier to link mobile payment accounts with foreign bank cards and increased transaction limits. Tourist establishments have upgraded their facilities to accommodate foreign bank cards. Telecom operators are also available at major city airports to assist foreign visitors in obtaining a mobile number upon arrival.
