Newcomer Stay Rates Surge in Atlantic Canada Study

Atlantic Canada

Great News! The latest data from Statistics Canada on immigrant retention rates is out, and it’s got some fascinating insights! Did you know that Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador) is seeing a surge in immigrant retention rates, while the prairie provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba are experiencing a decline? This could have major implications for the future of immigration in Canada. Keep reading to find out more!

The 2022 Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) examines the retention rate of immigrants through tax filing data. Five-year and one-year retention rates were analyzed using tax data from 2012-2020.

Ontario has highest overall rate of retention

A study shows that Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta have the highest retention rates for newcomers after 5 years. Saskatchewan and Manitoba experienced the largest drops in retention rates. New Brunswick saw an uptick in retention, while Prince Edward Island had the lowest retention rate in Canada. Newfoundland and Labrador showed an increase in retention rates after one year.

More Skilled workers staying in Atlantic Canada

The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIP) launched in 2019 has contributed to a higher rate of skilled worker retention in the Atlantic provinces. Nova Scotia saw an increase of 42.4 percentage points, while New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador also experienced higher retention rates. The AIP offers economic immigration opportunities to foreign nationals in Canada’s Atlantic provinces, providing them with a job offer and individualized settlement plan. Family-class sponsored immigrants have the highest retention rates, with 91.7% staying in the province they landed in.

Why it matters

Canada’s Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are designed to attract economic immigrants who are best suited to local workforce needs. Although skilled immigrants have a lower retention rate, those who arrived through the Express Entry Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or through the caregiver pilot program had a high rate of retention.
