Express Entry Categories to Remain Stable, Confirms IRCC

Express Entry canada

Big news, folks! Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that it will be extending the use of the six categories currently eligible for category-based selection in Express Entry draws in 2024! That means that candidates with specific qualifications such as education, work experience, or language skills will continue to be selected to support identified economic needs and priorities. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to showcase their skills and expertise and potentially gain entry into Canada’s thriving economy. Get ready to seize the moment and make your mark in the land of maple leaves!

The six categories target candidates with:

  • French language proficiency
  • Work experience in healthcare occupations
  • Work experience in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
  • Work experience in trade occupations
  • Work experience in transport occupations
  • Work experience in agriculture and agri-food occupations

Category-based selection draws for Express Entry candidates were introduced in May 2023 to invite newcomers who can help fill urgent gaps in Canada’s workforce. The categories were chosen following public consultations with provinces, territories, and stakeholders. They will be reviewed yearly as part of IRCC’s report to parliament.

Category-based selection in 2023

In 2023, 1,500 Express Entry candidates were invited in healthcare occupations. In 2024, 7,000 candidates with French proficiency were invited in a category-based selection draw.

Who is eligible for category-based selection?

To be eligible for Express Entry, candidates need at least six months of continuous work experience in a single occupation in Canada or abroad. French language proficiency category requires a score of 7 in all four categories of Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is a system that manages three immigration programs in Canada: Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades. Candidates are scored with the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) based on various factors such as work experience, age, language ability, etc. The highest-scoring candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in an upcoming Express Entry round. Candidates have 60 days to submit their final application for permanent residency to IRCC after receiving an ITA.
