Responsibilities of Canadian Permanent Residents

Canadian permanent residency (PR) is a dream come true for many! Especially for international students, temporary foreign workers, and families awaiting reunions, it’s a golden opportunity to build a new life in a beautiful country.

However, as a permanent resident in Canada, you have important responsibilities, including a residency obligation. But with some knowledge and preparation, you can enjoy all that Canada has to offer. Explore natural landscapes, vibrant cities, and connect with loved ones. Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!

What can permanent residents do?

Permanent residents in Canada enjoy many of the same social benefits as citizens, such as healthcare coverage. They can live, study, and work anywhere in Canada, and may be eligible to apply for citizenship. However, they cannot vote, run for political office, or hold some high-security jobs.

Permanent Resident’s Obligation to Stay in Canada
To keep your PR status, spend at least 730 days in Canada within five years, not necessarily consecutive. Time spent abroad may also count.

How Do You Calculate Your Permanent Residency Obligation Days?
Have you lived in Canada for at least 2 years (730 days) in the last 5 years? To renew your PR card and status, you need to meet the residency obligation. This can be met by accumulating days in Canada over the last five years.

Are you short on residency obligation days?
Yes, you can meet your residency requirement while staying outside Canada if any of the below-listed scenarios apply to you, if:

  • You are or were working full-time for a Canadian business or organization, or the Canadian federal, provincial, or territorial government.

  • You traveled with a spouse or common-law partner who is a Canadian citizen.

  • You traveled with a spouse or common-law partner of a permanent resident working full-time outside Canada for a Canadian business or Canadian government organization.

Any days spent outside Canada in the above-listed scenario can also be counted towards the permanent residency obligation.

How Can You Lose Your Canadian Permanent Residency Status?
Your PR status won’t be lost if your PR card expires. You could lose it if an officer determines you are no longer a PR after an inquiry or PRTD appeal following a refusal. It can also be revoked if a removal order comes into force. Even if you don’t meet the residency obligation, you will still stay a PR until an official decision is made.
